Not the coffee...the program.
Hemi 'Cuda for rant penance.
Seriously though, I've been working on my Captain's computer trying to get it up and running so he can sign things digitally for a little over a month. I'd looked at forums. I'd contacted the admins for the specific program. I AM an admin on the network. I couldn't get anything to work. I've not only uninstalled and reinstalled Java, i did a full on reimage of his system. Nothing worked. And then, one of my Master Sergeants walks into the office, asks what version of Java he has. I let him know that he has the exact same version of Java that I do on my computer and not only the 32-bit version, but also the 64-bit version. He looks at me and asks if I've tried the 64-bit version of Explorer. Shit fucking works first try. Seriously? SERIOUSLY?!? What the hell Oracle? Why can't your shit work on both? It makes no sense to me and I'm the one who's supposed to understand this stuff.
/endrant.

Sometimes I'm amazed that companies like Oracle are still in business.

I've never liked Java. As a SysAdmin, I've always had problems with it. I am truly surprised that companies still outsource to Java or build upon Java for their products.

37 billion dollar company, built on all kinds of products other than Java? They did not acquire Sun until 2010.

LOL
I doubt Kinja uses Java though
It's probably running on Fortran in the back end

There are a lot of business reasons to keep using it (at least on the backend, Java for desktop apps sucks ass):
1. Good and plentiful documentation
2. Runs on Windows, Linux and Solaris
3. Tons of open source frameworks, tools and technologies that work with it
4. Can be very secure if coded properly. Most banks and large financial institutions use Java to build their web applications
5. Commercial support
6. Big user base so it's not hard to find developers with Java experience and no real concern that building apps using Java will become a problem due to Java dying out
7. Android uses Java
Languages such as PHP, Python, Ruby, etc. can be easier to learn. But they can also be harder to scale with because of their specific issues. And finding experienced python developers is not easy.
The closest thing to Java is C# since it's basically Microsoft's version of Java. They tweaked Java to improve it and make it work in their ecosystem. A lot of developers prefer using C#. But Microsoft is stubborn and doesn't officially condone running C# on Linux servers. Which kills it for businesses that prefer to use Linux on as many servers as possible.
